Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has escaped serious censure for his part in the brawl that marred the end of the Spanish Supercopa tie against Barcelona in August. The Portuguese has been given a two-match ban that applies only to Supercopa matches, the pre-season competition between the Liga champions and the Copa del Rey holders.

During the incident Mourinho appeared to jab a finger in the eye of Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova, who was yesterday banned for one match by Spain's governing body the RFEF for his involvement. Vilanova responded to Mourinho's actions by striking him on the side of the head as the match – which Barça won 3-2 – finished in ugly scenes at the Nou Camp. Both men have been fined €600 (£518).

Mourinho was handed a touchline European ban by Uefa last season for his actions during the Champions League semi-finals between Real and Barça.
