Modern football’s two outstanding triumvirates, the ‘BBC’ and the ‘MSN’, were in devastating form this weekend as Real Madrid and Barcelona routed Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao respectively.

Such was the superpowers’ dominance this weekend that Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all scored on the same day in La Liga – remarkably, for the first time ever.

It was Bale, the former Tottenham Hotspur winger, who kicked things off, ghosting in to head home from a corner at the near post.

Ronaldo doubled Los Blancos’ lead minutes later, shooting on the turn to find the top left-hand corner, while Benzema completed the set shortly after, finishing acrobatically off Bale’s cross.

The Frenchman went on to grab a brace, as did Ronaldo, as Zinedine Zidane’s side claimed a 5-1 win and a comfortable three points against the relegation-threatened strugglers, but injuries to both Benzema and Bale mean the trio will be out of action for some weeks at least.

Like the ‘BBC’ before him, Messi wasted no time either, slotting home from the penalty spot after six minutes to give Barça the lead in their late kick-off. Bilbao goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz was sent off for conceding the spot-kick and, down to ten-men, the away side struggled to cope.

Neymar’s dink over Iraizoz’s substitute Herrerín Buisán on the half-hour mark was then followed by a lovely team move in the second half, which Suarez rounded off with a tidy finish into the bottom-right hand corner.

Suarez went on to grab a hat-trick and there was even room for Ivan Rakitic on the scoresheet, as Luis Enrqiue’s men claimed a 6-0 win.

Never since the formation of the two trios have all their members scored on the same day, despite their phenomenal goal tallies, and one punter had the good fortune to have bet that they would all find their shooting boots.

Altogether this term, the ‘BBC’ just have the edge, scoring 45 goals to Barça players’ 44. The ‘MSN’, however, lead in assists, with 19 to the Real contingent’s 16.

After his hat-trick, Suarez moved into pole position in the race for the Pichichi, the trophy awarded to La Liga’s top scorer at the end of the season. He has 18 goals so far this season, but Benzema, Ronaldo and Neymar are breathing down his neck, all tied in second place on 16.
