Real Sociedad threatened to report referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez to the Spanish police after accusing him of treating their side unfairly in the 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid on Wednesday, in which he awarded Rafa Benitez’s side two controversial penalties.

Real were under pressure from the get-go their own fans jeered the side whenever they failed to convert a chance, with most of their displeasure being voiced towards the manager Rafa Benitez, and matters were not helped when Cristiano Ronaldo missed the first of two penalties that he would take during the match.

It came after Real striker Karim Benzema appeared to dive in the area with Gonzalez pointing to the penalty spot, only for Ronaldo to fire the ball over the crossbar. However, the Portuguese was given a chance to redeem himself when Carlos Martinez handled the ball, although he knew little about it.

Ronaldo placed the ball to the left of Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, and the San Sebastian side’s anger was only added to when they were refused a penalty shout of their own after Pepe tackled Jonathas in early in the match.

According to the Daily Mail, Gonzalez wrote in his referee’s report that Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay approached him at half-time and said: “This is shameful. You have come here to rob us, I will be filing a complaint to the police.”

The result kept Real within two points of leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, although the Catalan side have a game in hand after competing at the Club World Cup earlier this month.

The allegations that Gonzalez favoured Real is not the first time that Benitez’s side have had such claims made against the, with Rayo Vallecano coach Paco Jemez claiming that their match with Real shortly before Christmas brought “shame on Spanish football” after Rayo had Tito and Raul Baena sent-off in their 10-2 defeat.
