Liverpool suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat in Serbia against Red Star Belgrade as the side which they so comfortably cruised past a fortnight ago derailed their Champions League hopes.

Daniel Sturridge had Liverpool's best chance of the game after fifteen minutes when he blazed a sitter over the bar and from thereon out the Serbian's took an ascendancy on the game which they never let go.

Virgil van Dijk was at fault for the first goal, losing Milan Pavkov's run from a corner and the following header, which the Belgrade striker arrowed past a helpless Alisson.

However, the Brazilian goalkeeper may easily have done better to stop Pavkov's second: a swerving shot from long-range which bullied its way past his fingertips.

Liverpool did hit the woodwork twice in the following half but it seemed like it was never to be on a historic night for the home side which left Jurgen Klopp feeling aggrieved.
