Red Star vs Liverpool: Andrew Robertson reveals post-match inquest that he hopes will turn form around

Robertson said that the poor performance would be dissected the following day and did not expect Jurgen Klopp to hold back in his assessment

Andrew Robertson has admitted that Liverpool have lost some of their spark of late and hopes a post-match debrief on Tuesday's abject Champions League defeat to Red Star Belgrade can help them find form.

Two unanswered first-half goals from Milan Pavkov proved enough for Red Star to earn a famous victory over last year's runners-up, who were unusually slow, cumbersome and error-prone in Serbia.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, regularly holds post-match debriefings the day after a game regardless of the result and did so again on Wednesday in an attempt to understand what went wrong at the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

On Tuesday night, Robertson said that the poor performance would be dissected the following day and did not expect Klopp to hold back in his assessment.

"Look, the lads are disappointed. There's no hiding that. You don't forget about these results quickly and that's what happens," Robertson said, speaking after the final whistle.

"The gaffer, win or lose, he always speaks more the day after the game because that's when he can clear his head and that's where he gets the best out of us, where he can talk from his thoughts. That's what he's always done.

"It's no different if we win or lose but we'll definitely have a debrief tomorrow and I'm sure a few things will be said."

In his post-match press conference, Klopp claimed his side are struggling to 'find their mojo' after the defeat in Belgrade, having witnessed them win just three of their last nine games in all competitions.

Robertson agreed that, despite still being unbeaten in the Premier League, Liverpool are yet to properly hit their stride this season and believes Klopp is right to demand more from the squad.

"I think it's one of those periods we need to get through," the Scotland international said. "Last season everyone was used to us scoring four or five goals. That can't be possible every single game.

"At times we've dug out results, in the Premier League more so this season. Maybe it's not been as good to look at but we've been effective at it.

"But yeah, maybe we are missing a bit of a spark in terms of not winning four or five-nil in most games, but if [Klopp] thinks that we need to try and get it back. We need to come together as a team and try and get what the gaffer wants, try to get the spark and try to win games more comfortably."

Liverpool's hopes of reaching this year's Champions League knock-out stages now rest on their final two games away to Paris Saint-Germain and against Napoli at Anfield.

The draw between Napoli and PSG in Group C's other Tuesday night fixture means Liverpool will qualify if they win in Paris and Red Star fail to win at Napoli.

Despite Liverpool losing on both of their European trips so far this season, Robertson still believes victory away from home against the group's top seeds is possible.

"Of course [we believe we can win], we have to," he said. "We believe we can win every game, that's always been the case with us.

"We can perform a lot better than the two games we've had, they've been off days and we need to look at that, of course we do.

"Away from home last season, we were very good in the Champions League. This season we've found that a bit difficult. But arguably we're still to play the best team away and we need to go there and put in a much better performance than we have done."
