Former Chelsea assistant coach Henk Ten Cate is to be the new coach of Panathinaikos, the Greek Super League club announced on Friday.

Ten Cate, who was sacked by Chelsea shortly after the dismissal of manager Avram Grant last month, signed a two-year contract and succeeds Jose Peseiro, who resigned in May.

"In my career I have been used to working at the highest level of competition and that's one of the reasons why I consider this new step to be a great challenge," Ten Cate told the club's Web site (www.pao.gr)

"Panathinaikos' organisation, history, ambition and attitude towards football in general match those of the greatest football clubs in Europe."
