Liverpool lift Champions League trophy after beating Spurs in Madrid

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool‘s 2-0 Champions League final victory against Tottenham Hotspur as the “best night of our professional lives”.

Liverpool took the upper-hand in the final after just two minutes when Moussa Sissoko handballed Sadio Mane’s cross and Mohamed Salah thrashed home from the penalty spot.

However, a gruelling contest then played out in stifling heat with neither side quite able to kick into full gear.

Tottenham finally grew into the game late on with Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura all spurning chances, but Divock Origi confirmed Liverpool’s sixth European Cup victory in the 87th minute with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

“I am so happy for the boys all these people, and my family,” Klopp said amid wild celebrations. ”They suffer for me, they deserve it more than anybody.

“Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank? And we have a keeper who makes difficult things look easy. It is the best night of our professional lives.

“It took a while, it is important for our development and improvement, This little mark helps a lot, now we can carry on. The owners never put pressure on us.

“Normally 20 minutes after the game I am half drunk, but now I have only had water!”

The victory also brought a cathartic end to Klopp’s losing streak in finals at the seventh attempt.

“It took a while obviously,” he added.

“We tried a lot of times but it’s important of course that we develop and improve. It’s always like this but we are doing good steps.

“This little mark helps a lot, so now we can carry on.”
