Tottenham’s Champions League clash against AS Monaco at Wembley has sold out with more than 85,000 fans expected to attend Wednesday night’s game.

The attendance marks a new home match record for the club, topping the 75,038 figure set in 1938 when Spurs faced Sunderland in an FA Cup tie.

Tonight’s game will also better the previous home attendance record set by an English club.

More than 75,500 fans watched Manchester United beat Lyon 1-0 in Europe’s elite competition in the 2007/08 season.

This is Tottenham’s first appearance in the Champions League since the 2010/11 season during which they reached the quarter-finals of the competition before being knocked out by Real Madrid.

It was a significant campaign for Gareth Bale too who announced himself on the European stage with a stunning hat-trick against Inter Milan in the group stages.

Despite losing the Welshman, Tottenham have moved from strength to strength under Mauricio Pochettino.

With Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow in their group, Pochtettino’s side will fancy their chances of qualification.

An extra 1,200 tickets, in the East and West stands, were put on sale on Wednesday morning in a bid to accommodate for the high demand but were quickly snapped up.

The West Stand will be the ‘home’ end as Spurs try to recreate the atmosphere of White Hart Lane.

Pochettino is expected to restore Erik Lamela to the team tonight after he was left on the bench for last weekend’s 4-0 win over Stoke.
