Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk lashes out at ‘jealous’ domestic rivals following Champions League final loss

The defender insists ‘there is no limit’ to what the team can achieve

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has hit out at “jealous” rival teams and supporters for revelling in the club’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

The Reds endured a final to forget on Saturday night, as Mohamed Salah suffered an early injury before two Loris Karius howlers effectively handed the Spanish side victory.

But Van Dijk remains proud of his team-mates and could not resist a dig at some of his club’s domestic rivals.

“Of course we should be proud of ourselves. All the teams in England want to be in our position right now,” he said.

“They act like they’re happy, but I think they should be jealous.

“We were here, unfortunately we lost, but I think we need to take this to next season and make sure we do even better than we did this year.”

The 26-year-old only joined Liverpool in the winter transfer window but has hit the ground running with his new team and insists “there is no limit” to what they can achieve.

The Dutchman tweeted: “Absolutely devastated with the result last night, but words cannot do justice to just how proud I am to be a part of this great club, with this group of players and staff.

“To play in a Champions League final for this great club has been a dream come true and although the result didn't go our way last night, we win together and we lose together and we will bounce back.

“There is no limit to what we can achieve as a group and we must keep believing. I am so excited for the future.

“Finally, thank you to the incredible fans of Liverpool. Your support for us has been mind-blowing. We appreciate it so much.”
