The Catalan giants received a raucous homecoming party following their Champions League success

Yesterday evening the newly-crowned European champions, Barcelona, arrived home to a spectacular celebration party at the Nou Camp.

Fireworks lit up the night sky in scenes reminiscent of an event like the Superbowl or Wrestlemania. The electric crowd screamed on as their heroes walked to the stage in the centre of pitch; with the loudest cheers saved for the record-breaking Lionel Messi and departing Catalan-hero Xavi Hernandez.

There was the obligatory pose with the silverware, explosions of confetti and stadium-wide rendition of Queen’s ‘We are the Champions’.

In between all the pomp and ceremony, there was time for a few speeches. Lionel Messi, who scored an incredible 58 goals this season, announced he is convinced Barcelona can replicate their treble-winning success next year.

Barcelona captain Xavi in his final farewell to the club, ended his speech by saying “Long live Barca, long live Catalonia”.

The 35-year old leaves Barcelona as one of the most decorated players in history – the European Cup was his 28th trophy of his senior career and his 25th with the Catalan giants. Next season Xavi will ply his trade for Qatari club Al Sadd.
