Carling Cup round-up: Fan ejected after Euell suffers racist abuse at Stoke
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway claimed after the Carling Cup defeat by Stoke that Jason Euell suffered racist abuse from a home supporter at the Britannia Stadium.
Police interviewed the Blackpool striker following the third-round match after a man was ejected by stewards and then detained. Euell was sitting in the dug-out when the incident happened during Stoke's dramatic 4-3 victory.
Holloway said: "There was one horrible moment when a racist remark was made to Jason by one supporter. I hope the fellow is banned for life. I thought these days were gone but maybe I am being naive."
Burnley, who knocked Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal out of the Carling Cup when a Championship side last season, were themselves turfed out of the competition by Barnsley at Oakwell last night. Hugo Colace's powerful header with 15 minutes to go gave Mark Robins' side a 3-2 victory.
Portsmouth, bottom of the Premier League with no points, fought back from a goal down to win 3-1 victory at Carlisle.
Sunderland cruised to a 2-0 win over Birmingham, Jordan Henderson's close-range finish and a Fraizer Campbell header putting Steve Bruce's side in control in the first half. Goals from Craig Mackail-Smith and Tom Williams gave Peterbrough a 2-0 home win over Newcastle.
Benni McCarthy's cross sneaked into the net to give Blackburn a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
