Hal Robson-Kanu put Reading into the fifth round with a late goal only six minutes after coming off the substitutes’ bench.

The Welsh international turned home an 88th-minute cross by Jordan Obita to complete his side’s comeback after they had fallen behind midway through the first half when Kenwyne Jones headed home a corner by Peter Whittingham. Oliver Norwood had equalised for the Royals with a low, 20-yard free-kick. Steve Clarke, Reading’s manager, had lost his job at West Bromwich Albion after a 1-0 defeat at Cardiff in December 2013. “I don’t think when I get back to the training ground the chairman will be waiting for me,” he said. “It certainly feels a lot better tonight – but then I didn’t think I’d get sacked last time!”

Bent breaks Derby duck to inspire nervy victory

Darren Bent scored his first goal for Derby but the Championship promotion chasers were given a real scare by Chesterfield of League One before they won a pulsating fourth-round tie 2-0 at the iPro Stadium. Bent headed in from close range in the first half but Chesterfield dominated possession for long periods and wasted good chances before Will Hughes sealed victory with a late solo effort.

Ighalo leads startling second-half comeback

Odion Ighalo scored four times as Watford produced a remarkable second-half performance to move within four points of the top of the Championship with a 7-2 victory over Blackpool.

The Hornets found themselves two goals down at the break, but they dug themselves out of that hole in sensational style with a devastating seven-goal showing after the break as Troy Deeney, Matej Vydra and Gabriele Angella joined in the home side’s free-scoring run after last week’s 5-0 win over Charlton.
