David Meyler scored the winning penalty to take Championship Hull City into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.

He kept his nerve to score the crucial spot kick against in-form Leicester, who had led in extra-time.

Abel Hernandez had thought he had made the breakthrough towards the end of the second half, as his header appeared to have crossed the line after slipping through Leicester keeper Mark Schwarzer’s hands, but play was waved on by referee Stuart Attwell. The replays showed it was a very hard call to make, one which would have been extremely difficult to make in real time.

Few would have looked forward to another 30 minutes. But the game had got off to a decent start, Andrej Kramaric going close inside 30 seconds for Leicester and Greg Luer close to opening the scoring for Hull moments later only to fire straight at a defender on the line.

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri made changes, with Jamie Vardy, the Premier League’s top scorer with 10 goals this season, starting on the bench. Instead, Shinji Okazaki and Kramaric started for the Foxes, but they were given little hope from a well-drilled Hull defence.

Ranieri also introduced Riyad Mahrez, who was his customary box of tricks on the flank and had one right-foot effort blocked.

However, 10 minutes into extra-time Leicester scored. Vardy was put through one-on-one with goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic and although his shot was saved, Mahrez was in the right place to stroke home the rebound.

Hull found a way back after 106 minutes when Chuba Akpom’s shot across goal was palmed away by Schwarzer but Hernandez reacted quickest and slotted the ball home.
