Norwich City, Queen's Park Rangers and Swansea City were all knocked out of the Carling Cup last night, as the promoted Premier League teams rotated heavily and were punished by Football League clubs. Sunderland were also upset, losing 1-0 after extra-time to Brighton and Hove Albion. Craig Mackail-Smith scored the winning goal for the hosts.

Paul Lambert made 11 changes to his Norwich City side which had drawn 1-1 with Stoke City on Sunday. Hosting League One MK Dons at Carrow Road, though, they were shocked and beaten 4-0 in their second round tie. Former Manchester United winger Luke Chadwick was the hero, scoring twice against another of his former sides. Sam Baldock struck from distance, while Daniel Powell scored the visitor's fourth.

Neil Warnock only made eight changes, and kept captain Adel Taarabt in the side for QPR's home game with Rochdale. But it was not enough to avoid another defeat to League One opposition, as they went down 2-0. Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Gary Jones did the damage.

Swansea City did not have home advantage, but they did make nine changes away at Shrewsbury Town and were punished, losing 3-1. The Premier League side went ahead through Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, but Marvin Morgan equalised before Mark Wright put the League Two side ahead. Nicky Wroe scored the third in stoppage time.

Other Premier League sides had an easier evening. West Bromwich Albion won 4-1 at Bournemouth, thanks to two goals from Marc-Antoine Fortuné. Aston Villa beat Hereford 2-0 at Villa Park, but needed goals in the final 10 minutes from Eric Lichaj and Nathan Delfouneso.
