Neil Warnock, the Queen's Park Rangers manager, labelled Blackburn striker El-Hadji Diouf a "sewer rat" after the striker was accused of verbally abusing QPR's Jamie Mackie as the Rangers forward was being carried off on a stretcher with a broken leg during his side's 1-0 third-round defeat at Ewood Park, David Hoilett scoring the game's only goal.

"The lads were furious with Diouf; he was calling Mackie all sorts," Warnock said, after the QPR man had suffered a double fracture in a tackle from Blackburn's Gaël Givet. Warnock added: "I can't abide people like that. He's a nasty little person. To call him a sewer rat would be an insult to sewer rats."

Yesterday the outrage at Diouf continued on Twitter with Mackie himself posting: "Proper disappointed that e diouf was in my ear while I'm on the deck with a broken leg, saying **** you and **** your leg. Thanks."

There were reports that Diouf was confronted by a number of Rangers players in the tunnel after the game and defender Bradley Orr added on Twitter: "Never meet a more repulsive human being than E H Diouf! Your time will come!"

Steve Cotterill, the manager of last season's beaten finalists Portsmouth was left fuming at the sending off of striker Dave Kitson as his side were knocked out by League One leaders Brighton. Kitson was red-carded after only 14 minutes in the 3-1 defeat for elbowing defender Adam El-Abd. Cotterill complained: "It was a poor performance by the officials. The linesman didn't see the incident. El-Abd went down holding his face, but Kitson said that he pushed him in the chest."

Everton, who have only scored 23 goals in 21 Premier League games, hit five in seeing off Scunthorpe at Glanford Park, and assistant manager Steve Round believes Jermaine Beckford, who got their second "is really finding his feet in the Premier League. He scored again and that was very pleasing. We know he can score goals, he is a really good finisher... we are really pleased with his progress."
