Ipswich maintained their promotion charge with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Charlton to remain second in the Championship, a point behind Bournemouth.

Tommy Smith opened the scoring on the half hour with a close range finish before the division’s leading scorer, Daryl Murphy, doubled the hosts’ advantage early in the second half with a header for his 17th of the campaign. David McGoldrick added gloss to the victory in front of the biggest Portman Road crowd of the season, his injury-time chip securing an eighth win in 10 matches for Ipswich and leaving the visiting team winless in seven.

Elsewhere, Wigan remained firmly in the relegation zone as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Sheffield Wednesday.

Malky Mackay’s side fell to a late goal from Austrian Atdhe Nuhiu, who headed past Scott Carson with 13 minutes remaining to leave the Latics second from bottom and three points from safety. Callum McManaman added to the hosts’ misery, getting himself sent off just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute, for a lunge on Claude Dielna.
