Party night in Burton-upon-Trent started with a group of local lads giving a display of break-dancing in the centre circle prior to kick-off. It ended with a different group of lads in Albion colours broken-hearted in the centre circle after watching Oldham's Carlo Corazzin score the decider in a dramatic penalty shoot-out and claim for his side an FA Cup second-round tie at home to Cheltenham.

It was a terrific night for the Cup, if not ultimately for Nigel Clough's home side. They came from behind to be level 1-1 at 90 minutes, were ahead 2-1 at 115 minutes and then conceded a late equaliser for 2-2, just as they had in the first playing of this tie earlier in the month. Only this time the outcome was penalties. Even they were pendulous, both sides being ahead at various stages in the 14-shot drama before Corazzin, an experienced Canadian international, stroked home the decisive goal during sudden death to make it 5-4.

Burton might argue that they should have had a penalty late in normal time when Christian Moore appeared to have his shirt pulled. Clough mentioned it without bitterness afterwards, apparently content for his team to have played so well and so courageously. "It was a tremendous cup tie," he said. "The lads are obviously down to have gone out on penalties but we can go away from the this with an enormous sense of pride."

Oldham had travelled to Eton Park expecting a scrap. Clough has assembled a well-organised blend of former League players and youngsters capable, on their day, of exceeding the sum of their parts. Last night they showed just why they won the UniBond Premier League with a record number of points last season to gain promotion to the Conference. And why that should not be the limit of their ambition.

The home side had the clear first-half chances, Paul Talbot, Neil Glasser and Moore going close. But it was the visitors who took the lead on 50 minutes through Clyde Wijnhard before Moore levelled five minutes from normal time.

The shaven-headed striker scored with his head again to put Burton on the verge of a famous win in the 110th minute after Matt Duke in Burton's goal had performed heroics to keep Oldham at bay. He was unable to stop David Eyres' leveller four minutes from the end of the 120. Nor Corazzin's decider.
