Doncaster Rovers have appointed former West Bromwich Albion boss Darren Moore as their new manager.

The 45-year-old, who was controversially dismissed by the Baggies in March with his side in the playoffs, replaces Grant McCann after his departure to Championship side Hull City.

Moore played 76 times for Doncaster during his playing career and returns to the club following last season’s sixth-place finish.

“It feels really good to be back, having been here before as a player to be back as the manager is an honour for me,” he told the club’s website.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know everybody around the place, the role really appealed to me given the Club Doncaster model currently in place.”

Moore, who was West Brom’s manager for 11 months after his appointment in April of last year, will be aiming to build on last season’s progress at Doncaster.

McCann’s side reached the League One playoffs but were beaten by Charlton in the semi-final.

“I’m really pleased to have Darren on board,” said Doncaster’s chief executive Gavin Baldwin. “He was a really strong candidate and I am confident he is a really good fit for the club.

“His values match ours, and I’m sure our supporters join the owners and myself in giving him a warm welcome and wishing him well at the club. Everyone is now focused on having a good season and building towards the opening game against Gillingham.”
