Ian Evatt, the Chesterfield defender, has given a statement to police following an alleged assault as he left the pitch at the conclusion of the League One play-off semi-final defeat to Preston.

A Jermaine Beckford 50-yard wonder-goal helped Preston to a 3-0 win at Deepdale, completing a 4-0 aggregate success for Simon Grayson's side.

But the occasion was marred as Evatt was subjected to an alleged attack by rival fans as he left the pitch.

Chesterfield's official Twitter account confirmed he had spoken to the police following the defeat, which included a goal from Joe Garner, the League One Player of the Year.

"The game's played in a great manner and Preston have had a really positive result as a club. The rivalry, you can't underestimate that, but to lay hands on people as supporters and men is a disgrace. Ian's fine.

"He did not react, categorically not. He never reacted. He was surrounded by a few thousand but he's conducted himself very well.

"He's an emotional kid anyway, Ian, and he's disappointed with the outcome of the two legs. And you are disappointed with the outcome of one or two individuals."

Preston made no comment.
