Keane's Sunderland revolution begins with six fresh faces

Dwight Yorke will make a surprise return to English football after he yesterday completed a £200,000 move from Sydney FC to Sunderland to become Roy Keane's first of six signings. The Wearside club were among the busiest in the transfer market yesterday.

Keane's former international team-mates, Graham Kavanagh, Liam Miller and and David Connolly, all left the Republic of Ireland camp preparing for tomorrow's European Championship qualifier with Germany in Stuttgart to join. The Celtic pair of Slovakian defender Stanislav Varga and Scotland Under-21 international Ross Wallace cost a combined £1m.

Kavanagh arrives from Wigan for £500,000, the 33-year-old former Middlesbrough, Stoke and Cardiff player signing a three-year contract. The 29-year-old forward Connolly also swapped the JJB Stadium for the Stadium of Light.

Manchester United's Miller signed for three years after arriving on a free transfer. The 25-year-old midfielder was one team-mate criticised by Keane in his infamous interview with MUTV deemed by the club too ferocious for broadcast.

Yorke, 34, played with Keane in United's treble-winning side of 1999, and has been with Sydney since his departure from Birmingham last July. Terry Butcher, Yorke's coach at Sydney, said: "It's sad to see Dwight leave. He is a great player and a tremendous personality to have in the team and he has worked very hard since I came to Sydney to be in shape to play. He has great respect amongst the players and coaching staff and he will be missed."

Yorke played 21 games for Sydney last season, scoring seven goals and lifting the A-League trophy after the inaugural Grand Final. He then went to the World Cup with Trinidad & Tobago.

While Kavanagh and Connolly were leaving Wigan, so too was full-back Pascal Chimbonda, for £6m to Tottenham, who also signed Fulham's Steed Malbranque for £2m.

Chimbonda was desperate to go after handing in a transfer request on the final day of last season. Tottenham had switched their attentions elsewhere after Wigan insisted they would not move from their £6m valuation of the full-back, but improved their offer.

"We would have loved to keep him," said Wigan's manager, Paul Jewell. "But his actions have always given the impression that he wanted out so my priority was getting the right price."

The Malbranque deal involves the Spurs winger Wayne Routledge joining Fulham on a season's loan.
