Adam McGurk’s second-half goal helped Burton Albion beat fellow promotion contenders Wycombe 1-0 and return to the top of League Two today after Shrewsbury Town had briefly overtaken them.

Shrewsbury had claimed top spot after beating Mansfield 1-0 thanks to Tyrone Barnett’s winner in one of two early kick-offs. But Burton swiftly reclaimed their position through McGurk’s superb left-footed finish from the edge of the area.

In the day’s other 1pm kick-off, goals from David Wheeler and Ryan Harley gave Exeter a 2-0 victory over 10-man Newport. Ismail Yakubu was sent off when he brought down Wheeler prior to Harley’s clinching penalty.

There was no change at the foot of the table, with the division’s bottom four sides all losing.

Cheltenham remain bottom after being beaten 1-0 at home by Stevenage, who climbed to sixth place.

Tranmere still occupy 23rd position after their 1-0 home defeat by Luton Town, while Hartlepool remain one point clear of the drop after losing at home to Southend by the same score.

Goals from Piero Mingoia, Josh Windass and Seamus Conneely gave Accrington a 3-1 win over Carlisle. Harrison Dunk scored in the opening minute as Cambridge beat Northampton 1-0 while Morecambe came from behind to beat fourth-placed Bury 2-1.

Veteran striker Jamie Cureton, 39, scored a hat-trick as Dagenham beat AFC Wimbledon 4-0. Portsmouth’s 2-1 win at Fratton Park meant Plymouth slipped out of the play-off places.
