Marvin Emnes' far-post strike just after the hour, his eighth goal in nine games, saw Middlesbrough keep intact their 100 per cent away record, the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace taking them to the top of the Championship. Boro's Joe Bennett was sent off with 15 minutes left, but Palace could not capitalise.

Derby County's goalkeeper Frank Fielding was sent off after just 64 seconds of their Midlands derby at Nottingham Forest having felled Ishmael Miller. Andy Reid scored Forest's resulting penalty, but the 10-man Rams recovered to win 2-1. Jamie Ward equalised after 29 minutes and when the hosts failed to clear a 72nd-minute corner, Jeff Hendrick fired in the winner from 25 yards. The Rams are fourth.

"Coming off the back of consecutive defeats, wanting to stay in the top six and against the adversity of the opening two minutes, I thought it was an absolutely remarkable performance – staggering," the Derby manager, Nigel Clough, said.

Level on points at the start, Blackpool and Cardiff City drew 1-1 at Bloomfield Road. Don Cowie's header gave the Bluebirds the lead, but Kevin Phillips' fine curling shot after 62nd-minutes equalised.

Robert Koren's 25-yard effort saw Hull City beat Portsmouth 1-0 as the Tigers go level on points with Cardiff and 'Pool, Pompey's hopes of recovery thwarted by Luke Varney's late sending off. When Patrick Kisnorbo also saw red at Elland Road with the score 1-1 between Leeds United and Bristol City, he seemed to have tipped the scales in the Robins' favour. But Leeds' Andy Lonergan saved Nicky Maynard's penalty and Ross McCormack grabbed a late winner for Leeds.

Reading's run of five defeats ended with a 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers; Emile Sinclair, signed from Macclesfield, scored twice as Peterborough beat Burnley 2-1; Watford drew 1-1 at Barnsley.

League One

Danny Hollands scored twice as leaders Charlton Athletic won 3-2 at Rochdale, while second-placed Sheffield United beat Colchester 3-0.

League Two

Leaders Morecambe won 2-1 at Dagenham & Redbridge, but the victory of the day came at Hereford United, where Gillingham won 6-1.
