Stewart's strike slams the brakes on Burnley revival
Damion Stewart brought Owen Coyle back to earth last night forcing a first defeat on the new Burnley manager after six games at the helm. The 2-0 win lifted Queen's Park Rangers off the bottom of the Championship. Rangers clearly failed to read the script at Turf Moor with the Jamaica defender meeting Scott Sinclair's corner at with a firm, downward header on the hour.
The on-loan Birmingham striker, Rowan Vine, then raced clear in stoppage time to fire into an empty net after Gabor Kiraly had strayed upfield in search of an equaliser. Burnley's deflated manager Coyle cited the loss of the defender Clarke Carlisle as a turning point: "We got caught at the set play when their lad, who Clarke had been picking up, headed in," Coyle said.
Ipswich added to their superb home record with a ninth win in 10 games at Portman Road this season, beating Leicester 3-1.
Ipswich broke away in the 19th minute with Danny Haynes easily beating Joe Mattock tocross for Pablo Counago's firm finish.
The Foxes drew level eight minutes later as Iain Hume beat the offside trap to lob Neil Alexander. Patrick Kisnorbo then saw red for his foul on Counago which resulted in the Ipswich penalty, Alan Lee converting. Jonathan Walters second-half close-range strike eased the hosts home.
At Bloomfield Road a powerful drive by Steven Thompson after 14 minutes gave Cardiff a 1-0 edge over Blackpool which was preserved by some superb acrobatics from the on-loan Manchester City keeper, Kasper Schmeichel.
