Todd offered to quit after last night's 2-0 home defeat by Millwall left Swindon third from bottom of Division Two.

Derby County immediately moved into ask to speak to Todd, 51, about a move to Pride Park.

The Rams, bottom of the Premiership, are believed to want Todd to become Jim Smith's number two with a view to him taking over as manager at the end of the season.

Swindon chief executive Peter Rowe said: "We have refused his resignation and are discussing the situation with our team of lawyers.

"Following a meeting this morning our chairman Terry Brady received a phone call from Derby County. That has been followed up by fax seeking permission to approach Colin Todd.

"We are now talking to our lawyers with regard to a reply to that request.

"We will be having discussions with Derby as to how they wish to take this forward.

"It was never the case that we wanted Colin Todd to leave the club and it probably still isn't.

"This approach has come out of the blue and we have to be seen to be doing everything that is right for this club."

Smith today said: "I know how I would like to finish - it is by bringing in someone we are all agreed about and making him manager with me around for a year to help him out."
