For a side supposed to be struggling, George Burley's team were vibrant from the start and would have led after six minutes but for a vital block by John McGreal, which prevented Grzegorz Rasiak steering the ball home from Reich's cross. Burnley escaped again when Reich's header sailed narrowly over from six yards before Rasiak sent a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Heavy rain had threatened a postponement which Burnley must have wished had been granted when Derby scored twice in six minutes.

After 57 minutes Inigo Idiakez swung in a teasing free-kick and Tudgay arrived at the far post to head home his fifth goal of the season. Rasiak then collected the ball on the right flank, after McGreal underhit a backpass, and rolled the ball across the six-yard box where a gleeful Reich tapped home. Rasiak could even afford to fire wide when well placed in the dying minutes.
