The Norwich City manager, Nigel Worthington, feels his side needs the full backing of their supporters as they attempt to return to the Premiership after an absence of nine years.

Norwich looked nervous during the opening 45 minutes of their game against Gillingham at Carrow Road on Tuesday. However, urged on by a crowd of 23,000, Worthington's team scored three times in five minutes during the second half to maintain their place at the top of the First Division. "It's important now that the crowd back the players from the first minute onwards, Worthington said after their 3-0 win. "They were terrific in the second half but they didn't help us in the first half.

"They were edgy and they made the players edgy and that just isn't acceptable," he added. "I'm not having a go at them because the supporters have been magnificent home and away this season, but we're now at the stage where their support is going to be vital to give the players encouragement and take us over the finishing line."
