Jason Bent, the Plymouth Argyle midfielder, converted the decisive spot-kick as the holders Canada saw off unheralded Martinique 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup in Miami on Saturday.

The two teams were level at 1-1 after extra time. The Wycombe Wanderers defender Mark Rogers had put through his own goal after 63 minutes to put Martinique, who are not full Fifa members, ahead. The Hearts player Kevin McKenna, with his third goal of the tournament, headed the equaliser 10 minutes later.

Costa Rica, with a golden-goal winner from Ronald Gomez, beat Haiti 2-1 to reach the last four as well.
