* Juninho looks likely to start for Brazil in their opening World Cup match against Turkey on Monday. Flamengo's former Middlesbrough midfielder was included in the first team against the reserves in a training match yesterday, an indication that coach Luiz Felipe Scolari plans to start him against the Turks. There was good news for everyone else during the game when the Brazilians, who have won penalty shoot-outs in the last two World Cups, missed eight spot-kicks. The sequence began when a penalty was awarded for the seniors. Ronaldinho fired over the bar and Scolari ordered another player to have a go, only to see Ronaldo miss as well. Rivaldo then hit the post before Juninho's effort was saved. The first team were later emulated by their opponents when Denilson, Luizão, Edilson and Kleberson all missed.

* Tottenham's Kasey Keller, who is in competition with Brad Friedel of Blackburn Rovers to be the United States' first-choice goalkeeper, strained his left elbow in training yesterday, though team doctors said the injury is minor.

* Guus Hiddink, the South Korea coach, is favourite to succeed Erik Gerets at PSV Eindhoven once the tournament is over. Gerets was fired last week at the end of an Asian tour after the PSV players said they had lost confidence in him.
