Brussels explosions: Belgium national football team cancel training after blasts

At least 13 people are feared dead and many more wounded after a series of blasts in Brussels on Tuesday morning

Belgium's national football team have cancelled a training session scheduled for this morning after explosions struck Brussels airport and the city’s Metro system.

At least 13 people are feared dead and many more wounded following blasts near check-in desks for American Airlines and Brussels Airlines before another explosion was reported at Maelbeek Metro station.

“Our thoughts are with the victims,” a statement on the Royal Belgian Football Association’s Twitter account said.

“Football is not important today. Training is cancelled.”

Belgium are due to play Portugal in an international friendly at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Tuesday March 29 before travelling to face Switzerland the following Saturday.

A spokesperson for Brussels Airport said: “There have been two explosions at the airport. Building is being evacuated. Don't come to the airport area.

“All airport operations have been suspended until further notice. Passengers that are still located in other areas in the airport are asked to remain calm and wait for further information.”
