England Euro 2016 squad: Marcus Rashford books spot, Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend miss out

England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed the 23 players he will take to France next month

Manchester United's teenage striker Marcus Rashford has been named in the England squad for Euro 2016 with Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend missing out.

With Fabian Delph, the Manchester City midfielder, ruled out with injury, Roy Hodgson has elected to name a quintet of strikers in his 23-man squad, suggesting a breakaway from defensively-leaning tactics of previous tournaments.

The England manager has chosen to omit Premier League winning midfielder Danny Drinkwater, 26, despite helping Leicester City secure an unlikely title triumph last season while Andros Townsend, 24, appears to have suffered for being unable to prevent Newcastle United suffering relegation.

Hodgson reportedly informed the pair they would not be travelling to France in a face-to-face meeting after training at Watford’s London Colney base on Tuesday morning.

Rashford's inclusion remains the headline, however, after scoring just two minutes into his England debut in a 2-1 victory against Australia on Friday night.

The 18-year-old United striker became England’s youngest debutant goal-scorer in the process, breaking Tommy Lawton’s 78-year record at the Stadium of Light. Rashford has now scored nine goals in 19 appearances for club and country despite still studying towards his A-Levels at Ashton-on-Mersey School in Sale.

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge will also be forgiven for letting out a sigh of relief after proving his fitness this weekend.
