England's man-for-man marking
Paul Robinson Stopped Riquelme twice and Tevez in the first half and dived at the feet of Saviola in the second. Outstanding all-round performance. 9 out of 10
Luke Young Looked unsteady early on and the power of Sorin going forward was a reminder of what a top international full-back can do. Improved though. 6
John Terry The leader of the defence once again although seemed to defend deeper than usual and not so dominant in the air from dead-balls. Resolute. 7
Rio Ferdinand An excellent block in the penalty area late in the game but not quite a commanding presence against Crespo. Still short of his best. 6
Wayne Bridge After only one game back for Chelsea it was understandable he struggled. Well off the pace and beaten for first goal. 4
Ledley King Fought his way back into this match. Looked like he might have been overrun at first but, in the hour he played, worked hard to get a grip. 7
David Beckham Up against a difficult opponent in Sorin but, as ever, his passing of the ball was excellent. Could have scored with a late header. 7
Frank Lampard Tidy and dogged without dominating the match. Might have scored with a couple of chances around the hour. 7
Steven Gerrard From left-back to right midfield he struggled to get into the game, but his two killer passes - one to Rooney, the second for Owen's first goal - were golden. 8
Wayne Rooney Exceptional, but do we expect anything less? Shrugged off defenders, hit the post and took his goal brilliantly. Almost chipped the keeper as well. 9
Michael Owen Played not much better than a 4 until 86th minute but that score had more than doubled by the final whistle. A predator of staggering confidence. 9
SUBSTITUTES
Paul Konchesky (for Bridge, h-t): He went missing for Samuel's goal. Willing competitor but not for this level. 5
Joe Cole (for King, 58): Inspirational. With all those tricks, the Argentinians must have thought he was one of theirs. Made the winner. 8
Peter Crouch (for Young, 81): Without Ayala, the Argentinians failed to control him. Made openings with his passing. 7
