Harry Kane will continue to take corners for England at Euro 2016 after Roy Hodgson insisted that his centre-forward remained the best option for delivering the ball into the penalty area.

Despite topping the Premier League scoring charts with 25 goals last season, Kane has been assigned to corner-taking duty by Hodgson in recent games.

The Tottenham forward, one of the best headers of the ball in English football, continued with the role against Russia in Marseille.

But despite the loss of Kane’s aerial threat with the player taking corners, Hodgson remained defiant over the tactical decision by insisting he is the best man for the job.

“Harry is the best striker of the ball we have,” Hodgson said. “He’s the one who gives us the best delivery.

“We’ve tried many other players and we don’t get the same level of delivery as we get from Harry.

“And also we have so many players in the penalty area at the moment who are very good at attacking the ball – Wayne Rooney, of course, being one who is very good in that area – that we don’t necessarily need him there.

“We need him more on the ball, taking the kick because that’s our best chance of scoring a goal.”
