Portugal vs France commentary

Everyone remembers the commentary that covered Iceland’s brilliant goal against Austria that launched Gudmundur Benediktsson into the media limelight, but he’s been overtaken in the rankings by Relato Antena 1’s brilliant commentary pair.

Benediktsson shot to fame with his uncontrollable reaction to Arnor Ingvi Traustason’s late winner in the 2-1 Group E victory went viral, along with his reaction to Iceland knocking England out of the competition in the last-16.

However, Benediktsson has been trumped. Two commentators for Portuguese radio station Relato Antena 1 were calling the shots on the Euro 2016 final that looked destined for a penalty shootout.

With the match low on quality and clear-cut chances few and far between beyond Andre-Pierre Gignac’s late effort that cannoned of the post, even the commentary team appeared to be heading into a lull.

Then Eder struck. The former Swansea striker proved the unlikeliest of match-winners to strike the ball beyond the reach of the France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and into the back of the net. The goal proved to be Portugal’s first from outside the box in a European Championship since Rui Costa’s memorable strike against England in 2004, and boy did the commentators celebrate it.

Chants of “Gol! Gol! Gol! Gol! Gol! Gol! Gol!” filled the airways for over two minutes, and it’s a wonder how they managed to remain so excited for so long, even if their country had just won their first ever major trophy.

With Benediktsson laying down the benchmark before the Portuguese duo trumped him, all eyes are on the new Premier League season to see what the likes of Michael Own, Robbie Savage and the returning Gary Neville can muster.
