Former footballer Stan Collymore has been sprayed with tear gas by French riot police while filming tonight's violence between English and Russian supporters on Periscope.

Footage on social media appears to show supporters charging through the streets of Lille, where Russia played Slovakia in the European Championship this afternoon, as riot police using pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

England are set to play Wales tomorrow in Lens but have been advised to book hotels in Lille, 25 miles away, owing to the fact that the northern French town is too small to meet the demands of up to 80,000 British supporters.

Collymore, covering the tournament in a journalistic capacity, reported that it was “kicking off” between Russian and English supporters on the streets. The 45-year-old can be heard screaming “journalist!” as the police approach him with England fans being closed off into street corners by the authorities.

Local bars and restaurants have closed for business as fears grow that a repeat of the violence in Marseille could occur.

Meanwhile, 29 Russian football fans were deported this week in relation to the clashes during the 1-1 draw between the two nations on Saturday night in Marseille.

Uefa have issued Russia with a suspended disqualification from the tournament but can only impose further punishments if violence occurs inside the stadium.
