Iceland confirm Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is unavailable due to ankle injury inflicted by Jorginho

The 29-year-old played through the pain at Stamford Bridge before limping off in the 76th minute when he was substituted

Iceland have confirmed that Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is not available for their Uefa Nations League clash with Belgium due to an ankle injury picked up against Chelsea.

Sigurdsson was caught late on the ankle by Jorginho in the first half of Sunday’s goalless draw at Stamford Bridge and received treatment on the pitch for several minutes before deciding to play on. He eventually limped off in the 76th minute, to be replaced by Phil Jagielka.

Jorginho was shown a yellow rather than a red card by referee Kevin Friend for the challenge, and Everton manager Marco Silva drew attention to the incident in his post-match press conference.

“Did you see the Jorginho tackle? What did you think?” he asked the assembled journalists.

“I hope we don't lose Sigurdsson for the next matches after the Jorginho tackle. It's the international break but I don't even think he's in condition to play in those matches.”

Friend dished out five yellow cards in the first half of an ill-tempered contest at Stamford Bridge, the most shown in any half of Premier League football this season.

Sigurdsson has been in impressive form for Everton, registering six goals and two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions.

Iceland have already been relegated from Group A2 of the Uefa Nations League after losing all of their first three matches, scoring just one goal and conceding 11.

They take on Belgium in Brussels on Friday before facing Qatar in a friendly on 19 November.
