Jamie Vardy added to his England goalscoring account on Sunday as Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions comfortably dispatched of Lithuania at Wembley.

However, despite doubling England’s lead when coming on as a second-half substitute, the main talking point was the Leicester City striker’s mysterious black eye, which was not present during the 1-0 defeat to Germany on Wednesday.

Jermain Defoe gave England the lead, four years after his last game for the national team before Vardy, who replaced the Sunderland forward also found the net, after a neat interchange on the edge of the box.

Vardy was unsurprised after being asked how he suffered the injury during his post-match interview.

“It was a little accident. My head, or should I say my eye, decided to connect with a football and that's football for you,” the 30-year-old laughed.

That story may not be completely true, given the habit Vardy has taken up where he punches himself in the face after missing a chance he ought to have scored.

He did it against Sevilla in the Champions League and then even headbutted the floor after missing one for England on Sunday.

Perhaps he missed one too many in training and got a little too frustrated?
