Japan have withdrawn from this summer's Copa America in the aftermath of last month's earthquake and tsunami.

Organisers CONMEBOL have confirmed the Asian side, who were due to appear in Argentina as guests alongside Mexico, have pulled out after citing domestic fixture congestion caused by the disaster.

The South American confederation revealed they will meet to examine possible replacements for Japan, who were recently winners of their own AFC Asian Cup.

Even world champions Spain have been suggested as possible stand-ins but CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz said: "We will consult with Argentinian FA president Julio Grondona and other South American leaders to analyse what to do with the vacant position."
