Lazio and Spartak Moscow took their places in the second phase of the Champions' League last night, meaning nine of the 16 berths are now filled with one round of first phase matches to be played in two weeks' time.

Lazio recovered from conceding a first-half goal to crush Shakhtar Donetsk, of Ukraine, 5-1 in Rome and will finish second behind Arsenal in Group B. Andrei Vorobei gave the visitors the lead but the Italian team hit back with five goals in the second half, including a hat-trick from Claudio Lopez. Giuseppe Favalli and Juan Veron added the others.

Spartak Moscow qualified from Group A despite going down 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen, for whom Michael Ballack scored after the break. Spartak will finish second behind Real Madrid in the section.

The European champions, Real Madrid, were also in rampant mood, sending four past Sporting Lisbon without reply at the Bernabeu. England's Steve McManaman had a rare run-out as a substitute.
