A late goal by Oliver Neuville saw Germany beat Paraguay 1-0 and advance into the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Neuville volleyed home Bernd Schnieder's cross from close range after 88 minutes to settle what had been a disappointing match. Just before the final whistle Paraguay's Roberto Acuna was sent off for elbowing an opponent.

Germany will face Mexico or the USA in the next round of the tournament. After the game, Paraguay's manager Cesare Maldini announced his decision to resign.
