What can happen?

Germany already have four points which is almost certainly enough to see them through. They can avoid any doubt as long as they pick up at least a point.

Northern Ireland can finish no lower than third and are guaranteed to go through with a win. They will top the group if they win and Poland record anything less than a victory against Ukraine. A draw would also probably be enough to send them through. Lose, and they will have to wait on other results to see if they get a best third place slot.

Mario Götze

The Bayern Munich man has carried his indifferent club form into these championships, with two largely ineffective displays so far. Joachim Low has to decide whether to persist with Götze in the false nine role, or bow to growing calls for Mario Gomez to offer a more conventional option up front. If Götze does get the nod once again, it is likely to be the World Cup match winner’s last chance to justify his selection.

Northern Ireland are the only country to ever inflict home and away defeats on Germany/West Germany in a major tournament qualifying campaign. The minor miracle happened in qualifying for Euro '84, when a pair of 1-0 wins were still not enough to take Northern Ireland to the finals. Obviously, West Germany qualified.

Player to watch…

Jonny Evans

Northern Ireland’s crucial win over Ukraine owed much to the defensive foundation provided by Evans and West Brom club-mate Gareth McAuley. The former Manchester United defender will need to reproduce a similar performance in a game where his side will come under relentless pressure from the world champions. With a draw likely to be good enough to take his side through to an unexpected place in the last 16, motivation could not be greater.
