Romania fined and ordered to play next Nations League game behind closed doors by Uefa due to ‘racist behaviour’ of fans

Romania will have to play its next competitive game behind closed doors and its football association has been fined by Uefa for racist chants and banners at a Nations League game.

Uefa announced on Friday that the Romanian football association has been fined 50,000 euros (£44,339) for the racist behaviour of its supporters and another 23,000 euros (£20,397) for fans invading the field and lighting fireworks at the national stadium in Bucharest.

Europe’s governing body said Romania’s "racist behaviour" included incidents targeting neighbour Hungary when the national team played out a goalless draw against Serbia on 14 October.

Romania fans also held up a banner linking refugees to terrorism, and a video posted on social media showed supporters chanting a slogan supporting Serbia's territorial claim to Kosovo.

Lithuania are Romania’s next opponents in the Nations League, with the two sides set to face off in Ploiesti on 17 November.

Romania are coached by former AC Milan and Atletico Madrid defender Cosmin Contra and lie third in Group C4 of the Nations League, having won one and drawn three of their first four games.
