Scotland’s Stuart Armstrong tests positive for coronavirus as Kieran Tierney and Ryan Christie self-isolate

Tierney will miss Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City later this month on the same day that Christie misses Celtic’s derby against Rangers

Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of his nation’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel on Thursday night.

Armstrong returned a negative test result on arrival at Oriam on Monday, but a follow-up Uefa test returned a positive result on Wednesday morning, a day before the fixture at Hampden Park.

Armstrong, 28, must now self-isolate for 10 days from the date of the positive test (Tuesday 6 October), so will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as the Israel game.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney and Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie must also self-isolate for 14 days as of Tuesday as a result of contact with Armstrong, and so must a physiotherapist and masseur involved in the Scotland set-up. 

Both Tierney and Christie will therefore miss their country’s three upcoming international games.

Tierney will also be unavailable for Arsenal’s Premier League trip to Manchester City on 17 October. 

Christie, meanwhile, will miss Celtic’s Old Firm derby against Rangers on the same date.
