Co-hosts Japan have been knocked out of the World Cup after losing 1-0 to Turkey in the second round.

Turkey's winner came after just 12 minutes of the first half when Umit Davala took advantage of poor marking and uncertain goalkeeping to head in from a corner.

Japan enjoyed some good pressure throughout the match, but were unable to break down the stubborn Turkish defence. Turkey will now go on to face Senegal in the quarter-finals.
