World Cup qualifying round-up: Scotland and Northern Ireland lose but there's joy for San Marino

Away from England’s uninspiring 0-0 draw in Slovenia, there was not much joy for any of the other home nations as Group F rivals Scotland fell to Slovakia.

Gordon Strachan’s side fell 3-0 in Trnana thanks to a Robert Mak double either side of half time before Adam Nemec secured the points for the hosts.

That leaves Scotland fourth in the Group F on four points, still ahead of Slovakia, who picked up their first win of the campaign.

In the other match in the group Lithuania beat Malta 2-0, the same scoreline England won by on Saturday, to move within two points of the Three Lions at the top of qualifying.

The other home nation in action tonight was Northern Ireland, who lost 2-0 to World Cup holders Germany.

The Germans, who also beat the Boys in Green at Euro 2016, scored two goals in four first-half minutes to secure the win, with Julian Draxler and Sami Khedira getting the goals.

There was joy for one nation however, as San Marino scored their first goal away from home in a World Cup qualifiers since 2001 as they lost 4-1 to Norway in Group C.
