Boris Johnson vows to block European Super League

Liverpool supporters’ groups are set to remove their flags and banners from the Kop at the club’s Anfield ground, with fans protesting the Reds’ involvement in the planned European Super League.

The English champions are one of six Premier League clubs set to be involved in the new breakaway competition, along with Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are the La Liga sides due to take part, with Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan being the Serie A teams involved.

At least three more clubs are expected to join the competition, plans for which have been met with widespread condemnation since they emerged on Sunday.

Players, pundits and fans have criticised the proposed league, with Liverpool supporters’ groups saying they will remove flags and banners from Anfield’s Kop, which has been adorned with such materials in the absence of fans amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Spion Kop 1906, a Twitter account involved in organising flags and banners on the Kop, tweeted: “We, along with other groups involved in flags, will be removing our flags from The Kop.

“We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above integrity of the game.”

The post was shared by Liverpool supporters union Spirit of Shankly, who called European Super League plans “embarrassing” and wrote: “As fan representatives we are appalled & completely oppose this decision.

“[Liverpool owners] FSG (Fenway Sports Group) have ignored fans in their relentless & greedy pursuit of money.

“Football is ours not theirs. Our football club is ours not theirs.”
