The Algerian Football Federation has suspended football indefinitely after the death of Albert Ebosse, who died after being hit on the head by a stone thrown from fans.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Sunday adter Ebosse, 24, was struck on the head after JS Kabylie's defeat by YUSM Alger in Tizi Ouzou on Saturday. He died later in hospital.

In a statement, the federation said it had postponed the league in protest at the irresponsible actions of certain fanatics and hooligans who resort to violence in the stadiums which has reached an unacceptable level".

It added that it was considering taking further action, including the expulsion of the club at fault "from all competitions".

Ebosse's family are set to receive $100,000from the federation as well as the amount he would have earned over the remaining period of his contract with JS Kabylie.

The Algerian interior ministry has ordered an investigation into his death, as well as an inquiry into hooliganism in the North African country.

According to the BBC, the 1st November 1954 stadium was under maintenance on Saturday, with fans using loose stones on the ground. The investigation will ask why the stadium was being used if work was still in progress.

Ebosse (pictured above scoring in the game on Saturday night) joined JS Kabylie in 2013 and was the top scorer in Algeria’s top flight league last season. His 17 goals helped his team to finish second in the league to Saturday night’s opponent.
