Barry line up Porto with historic win

Barry Town made history yesterday when they became the first Welsh club to win a Champions' League tie. The League of Wales champions beat Shamkir 1-0 in the second leg to win their first qualifying round 3-0 on aggregate.

Their remarkable victory means that Barry will now enjoy a lucrative tie against Porto in the second qualifying round, the first leg in Portugal next Wednesday and the return in Wales the following week.

"Whatever happens they can't take this result away from us," the Barry manager, Peter Nicholas, said. "From the moment they had their player sent off, we had the game in our grasp. And when we scored in the second half it was just a case of running the clock down because it was all over, they were dead and buried."

Barry, 2-0 up from the first leg at Jenner Park last week, secured the conclusive goal when Lee Phillips headed home in the 57th minute.

Things went badly for the Azeris after the sixth-minute dismissal of Badrei Kvaratskelia, Shamkir's Georgian-born winger, for an off-the-ball incident. He kicked the Barry Town goalkeeper, Timothy Clark, whose retaliatory kick went unnoticed by the linesman.

A band of 200 expatriates and travelling Welsh supporters was protected throughout the match by a vast police presence that almost rivalled the number of spectators. The Welsh escaped the ground with a few stones and other missiles being aimed in their direction, but generally met with a good-natured reaction from the vast majority of disappointed Azeris. As the second half was played out, increasingly forlorn home fans repeatedly cried: "Can I have my shirvan [£1.40] back?"
