Brockenhurst and Andover Town score 29 consecutive penalties to set new record

The figure reached before one was finally missed is thought to be a world record

Scoring a goal from 12 yards with just a goalkeeper to beat always seems like a straight-forward task.

But when the pressure of penalties kicks-in, spot-kicks have a habit of going high, wide or straight to the keeper. Think of England at any tournament for conclusive proof.

Yet the players of Brockenhurst and Andover Town appear to be made of stronger stuff, putting the pressure of burying the ball in the net to the back of their minds to score 29 consecutive penalties.

The incredible string of successful spot-kicks occurred last night during the Hampshire Senior Cup match. The match had finished 0-0 after extra-time before it was time for the game to be settled on penalties.

The man who stepped up for the 30th penalty - and missed - was Andover's Claudio Herbert. Speaking to the BBC afterwards he said: "I didn't realise the magnitude, it was a bit of a blur, the keeper pulled off a great save."

Despite his missed kick, the two sides now find themselves in English football record books with the Football Association confirming it as a new record. It surpassed the 27 scored by Dagenham & Redbridge and Leyton Orient in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy Tie in 2011. It's also thought to be a world record for the highest number of successful spot-kicks.

However, they would have had to go someway to reaching the world record for the highest number of penalties to settle a tie. In 2005, KK Palace and the Civics needed 48 of them to settle their Namibian Cup tie before the latter eventually prevailed 17-16.
