Captains should have board role says PFA chief

Professional Footballers Association chief executive Gordon Taylor has called for club captains to be given boardroom roles in order to try and improve the link between players and club hierarchies.

Taylor believes that the addition of senior players in the decision-making centres of their clubs would be an innovative way to enable players to better understand what happens behind the scenes.

In what Taylor sees as a potentially invaluable role, the selected player would be well-placed to inform their team-mates about off-field matters.

"I would like to see players [club captains] on the main board of clubs," Taylor said in an interview with FC Business magazine.

"I think we need to move towards complete transparency in our game.

"Having the club captain on the board, being made privy to the financial situations and visions of the club and being able to relay that to his team-mates can only be good for the game."

He added: "I also advocate the idea of having supporters on the board as well.

"As long as they are organised this will have only positive impacts on clubs and I'm glad to see that some are heading in that direction."
