Chesterfield the team to watch for goal flurries

Chesterfield grabbed all the attention last season in the Third Division – mostly for the wrong reasons – as their successful promotion campaign was soured by a points deduction incurred for illegal payments to players, writes Conrad Leach.

However, although the Spireites still went up, that does not mean that their existing financial problems have gone away. What it may mean is that the administrators will be more lenient with their plight and, to that end, they have extended their administration period for another three months.

On the pitch things could be just as exciting. They lost their opening match of the season last Saturday 6-3 at home to Colchester. Today they travel to Oldham, who started off in another high-scoring game, a 3-3 thriller at Wrexham. An added attraction to Oldham's line-up could be the appearance of a Libyan international. Ragiab El-Garyef is on trial at Boundary Park and the midfielder, who has been capped 10 times by his country, is getting more familiar with his surroundings by also studying at Manchester University.

There may be 2,000 more Wrexham fans than normal in their match at Wycombe, as Wycombe are awaiting news on a safety certificate being granted for their away stand.

Peterborough, who entertain Cardiff City, will still be without two of their most experienced squad members. Strikers Jason Lee, once of Nottingham Forest, and Leon McKenzie, formerly of Crystal Palace, are still out with injuries.

In the Third Division, free-spending Hull City play host to Plymouth Argyle, their virtual opposites in terms of outlay. While Hull's manager Brian Little spent £800,000 this summer and has seen season ticket sales rocket, Plymouth's Paul Sturrock released a host of players and is relying on free transfers. The Scot has been using his contacts to bring in players from the Scottish League as well as free agents from Europe.
